Know Your Rights!
As a person with a disability, you have the right to:
Employment
Not be discriminated against in hiring or promotion if otherwise qualified for the
job. Employers can ask about one’s ability to perform a job, but cannot inquire if
someone has a disability or subject a person to tests that tend to screen out people
with disabilities.
Be provided with “reasonable accommodation” for your disability. This includes
steps such as job restructuring and modification of equipment, unless these
accommodations impose an “undue” hardship on business operations.
Public Services
Accessible services and communications in all government facilities
Public Accommodations
Auxiliary aids and services provided in public facilities for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, unless an undue burden would result. The removal of any physical barriers existing in the facility, if removal is readily achievable. If not, alternative methods of providing the services must be offered, if they are readily achievable.
Accessibility in all new construction and alterations of facilities.
Health and Insurance Rights
Equal Access to health services, free from discrimination.
Removal of most physical barriers that make it hard for you to use a health care facility.
A sign language interpreter, free-of-charge, if you need one for effective communication with your health care provider.
Be accompanied by your service animal when you visit a health care facility.
Not have health care denied, delayed or limited just because you have a disability.
Receive emergency room treatment to stabilize emergency medical conditions, regardless of ability to pay.
Not to be shut out of or charged a higher premium for your employer’s group health plan based on your disability.
Access to an Independent Medical Review if your health plan refuses to pay for a covered health benefit. |
