Partners in Communication
Our Program provides unique services for hard-of-hearing/deaf children from ages 0-17 and their families. We offer trainings in communication strategies, education in hard-of-hearing/deaf awareness and mental health support. We work with all communication modalities and teach a wide range of communication strategies including use of hearing aids and assistive listening devices, strategies that support listening and speech reading, informal ‘Home Signs’/’Baby Signs’ and introduction to Signed English and American Sign Language
All of our services are individually tailored to support the specific needs of each child and family. We also provide support, education and referral for families, teachers, social workers, audiologists, speech therapists, hospitals and social service agencies working with hard-of-hearing and deaf children and youth throughout San Francisco.
We provide the following services:
Family Communication Home Visits. The family is coached in communication skills, positive and effective parenting and language development through play. Sign language instruction or emphasis on oral communication are both options.
Individual Parent Educational Meetings. Support for parents of hard of hearing and Deaf children and youth, to improve understanding of the impact of the child’s hearing loss and to enhance communication in the homes and in the schools. Assessment and Referral: Educators work with the families by explaining the implications of language/communication of the child and the educational options that are available.
Advocacy in the Schools and in the Homes: A member of our team consults with families before the Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) or Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meeting, helping to define their goals and concerns followed by attending the meeting with the family.
Homework Groups. Groups are designed to enable deaf and hard of hearing children and youth to obtain skill, desire, and confidence in literacy and math. After-school groups at Hearing and Speech Center of Northern California, Hillcrest Elementary School, Aptos Middle School, and John O’ Connell High School enhance language development, school readiness, and academic performance.
Individualized Counseling for Children and their Families. Youth of any age and their family can be seen either in our office, or in another location convenient to the family.
Community Education/Workshops. Topics range from Deaf Awareness Workshops and Sign Language and Communication Workshops to service providers. Teacher Enrichment Project: Our educators train teachers in public schools best practices to address the communication needs of hard-of-hearing/deaf children in their classroom.
